The first TUF Gaming 18-inch laptop

Last week, we reported on a massive leak that gave us a glimpse at a surfeit of upcoming ROG gaming laptops from ASUS boasting Arrow Lake-HX and Strix Halo processors, along with RTX 50-series Laptop GPUs. The company has now gone ahead and officially teased its ROG Flow Z13 laptop and the ROG Strix 18 laptop, the videos for which were obtained by VideoCardz. Considering that these were just teasers, the details shared were sparse, but undoubtedly intriguing regardless.

The ROG Strix 18, will likely boast the Core Ultra 9 285HX and Core Ultra 9 275HX CPUs along with NVIDIA "Blackwell" Laptop GPUs, with up to an 175-watt RTX 5090 Laptop with 16 GB of GDDR7 VRAM. Multiple other GPU options will also be available, with the RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU being the entry-point as per the leaked listings. Clearly, the Strix 18 is poised to be a powerful and power-hungry desktop replacement-class laptop, along with a massive 18-inch mini LED screen with a speedy 240 Hz refresh rate. Needless to say, the G18 has no intention of being affordable.

Acer today announced the new Predator Triton 16 (PT16-51), the latest addition to its power-packed gaming line. This laptop for gaming and work is equipped with the latest 13th Gen Intel Core processors, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU, and up to 32 GB of DDR5 RAM, along with an abundance of features that would excite any type of gamer. To ensure the vital components are kept cool throughout gaming sessions, the laptop's advanced thermal solutions combine dual 5th Gen AeroBlade 3D fans, Vortex Flow optimization, and liquid metal thermal grease on the CPU, all housed within a thin metal chassis design.

Acer announced refreshes across its lines of Predator and Nitro gaming laptops, starting off the year with new models of the Predator Triton 500 SE, Predator Helios 300 and Acer Nitro 5. All of the laptops feature the latest 12th Gen Intel Core processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 Series Laptop GPUs, while the Acer Nitro 5 also includes AMD Ryzen 6000 Series processor options. They also come with one month of Xbox Game Pass, giving gamers day-one access to popular titles and the ability to play with friends, whether they're on PC or console.

In XMG's product line-up, the XMG CORE 15 and CORE 17 gaming laptops embody first-class hardware adoption in the upper-mid performance bracket. The new E21 model generation not only brings an update with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3060, but also introduces for the first time an optional 165 Hz IPS display with WQHD resolution. Featuring both current AMD and Intel 8-core processors, the laptops offer versatile memory and storage options. In contrast to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, the RTX 3060 in the XMG CORE laptops from the new E21 model generation shows a significant performance increase: with 3840 CUDA Cores, opposed to previously just 1920, the GPU is prepared for more demanding tasks than simply Full HD gaming at high quality settings. This explains why, for the first time, XMG now also offers the CORE 15 and CORE 17 with optional high-resolution WQHD displays. Since the graphics card operates at the maximum TGP specified by NVIDIA of up to 115 watts, it can unleash its full potential. XMG continues to offer both models with processors from AMD and Intel. However, the Intel version gets an upgrade to the Core i7-10870H, meaning that 8-core CPUs are now used across the board. The AMD-based laptops will utilise a Ryzen 7 5800H in the future, but until the Cezanne processors are more readily available, XMG is still planning on offering a transitional generation that combines the GeForce RTX 3060 with a Ryzen 7 4800H.

While its honestly staggering see how many products ASUS had on display at Computex this year, I think the number of laptops might take the cake. They had just about everyone imaginable on hand except a kitchen sink. The ROG lineup was represented by the Zephyrus M GU502, Zephyrus S GX502, Zephyrus G GA502, Strix Hero III, Strix SCAR III, and last but not least the Mothership. Meanwhile, the TUF Gaming brand demoed the FX705DU and FX505DU. More surprising is the fact AMD's Ryzen 3750H makes an appearance not only in the TUF Gaming laptops but in the Zephyrus series as well bringing a bit more selection to the once Intel dominated mobile market.

Taking a closer look at the Republic of Gamers lineup and our attention is immediately drawn to the ROG Mothership which due to its design is the most unique laptop on display here. ASUS today announced TUF Gaming FX505DY and TUF Gaming FX705DY, a pair of gaming laptops powered by the latest AMD Ryzen 5 3550H processor, with up to 32GB of RAM, and a range of storage options. This new platform is paired with discrete Radeon graphics tightly coupled to vivid FreeSync displays. Slim bezels frame the NanoEdge displays to further enhance immersion and shrink the overall footprint, while the reinforced chassis help the machines survive everyday life. AMD's Ryzen processors have taken desktops by storm, and TUF Gaming laptops lead the deployment of the newest version. There was a time when gaming laptops were as monstrous in performance as in size and design. There was no such thing as "less is more", and manufacturers always seemed interested in surprising us with grotesque designs that were far away from the aesthetics of ultrathin laptops.

But that has changed, and the new generations of discrete graphics cards for laptops has ushered us to a new generation of machines in which thinness is finally a virtue, not a symbol of weakness. The Dell Alienware m15 is the first gaming laptop from this manufacturer that bets on this kind of design, and the result seems to be a well balanced machine that represents a good compromise between power, thinness and weight.

ASUS's upcoming ROG GL504 Scar II, Hero II, and Zephyrus GM501 gaming laptops have one thing in common - 144 Hz/3 ms narrow-bezel panels. A source within the company confirmed that ASUS had partnered with AU Optronics to produce the new panel exclusively for its gaming laptops. The Taiwanese manufacturer even funded a portion of the panel's research and development. As a result, ASUS has exclusive rights to the 144 Hz/ 3 ms panel for at least a year. Gaming laptop competitors such as Gigabyte and MSI will have to wait it out or look elsewhere.

Certainly there are many display panel manufacturers in the likes of BOE Display, LG Philips, Samsung, and Sharp. Unfortunately, they don't offer a panel that is able to rival the 144 Hz/ 3 ms panel from AU Optronics, which is already in mass production. Consumers who aren't after a gaming laptop with a 144 Hz/ 3 ms panel have other viable options. The current offering on the market includes the MSI GS65 and Gigabyte Aero 15X that feature a 144 Hz panel with a slightly higher response time of 7 ms. And there's also the MSI GS63VR that comes with a 120 Hz/ 3 ms panel.

Similar to other laptop manufacturers, ASUS will also give their ROG Zephyrus GX501 the special Coffee Lake treatment. The new model (GX501GI EI005T) is powered by an Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor that operates at 2.2 GHz with a turbo boost clock of 4.1 GHz. With 9MB of onboard L3 cache, the Core i7-8750H boasts a 45W TDP. The Zephyrus GX501 comes with 16GB of DDR4-2400 memory and a 512GB SSD. The 15.6-inch display on the Zephyrus GX501 features a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 144 Hz refresh rate, and support for NVIDIA's G-Sync technology. Unfortunately, the laptop's very slim body forces ASUS to implement the Max-Q variant of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPU. Judging from the photographs of the latest Zephyrus GX501, the machine not only received a processor upgrade but also a slight facelift. It appears that ASUS has pushed the keyboard upwards closer to the display. The GX501GI EI005T was listed for 3499 Swiss francs at a Swiss retailer, which translates over to around $3657.

The Predator Helios 500 is Acer's 17.3-inch gaming laptop featuring one of Intel's upcoming six-core mobile Coffee Lake processors. Consumers can choose between a Core i9-8950HK with a 2.9 GHz base clock and 4.8 GHz boost clock or the lower-spec Core i7-8750H that runs at 2.2 GHz base clock and 4.1 GHz boost clock. Independent of processor model, the Helios 500 comes with a Full HD 144 Hz IPS display with NVIDIA G-Sync support. The onboard NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 is responsible for graphics duties. The Helios 500's other specifications include 16GB of DDR4-2133 memory and a 256GB M.2 SSD for primary storage. In terms of connectivity options, consumers receive three USB 3.0 ports, two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt support, HDMI port, DisplayPort, LAN port, and two audio connectors. The Intel Core i9-8950HK version costs 1999 PLN ($3500) while the Intel Core i7-8750H version goes for 8999 PLN ($2630).

Xiaomi held its Mi Mix 2S launch event at Shanghai, China a few hours ago where the Chinese giant revealed their first-ever gaming laptop. The Mi Gaming Laptop sports a clean, brushed aluminum chassis which measures 20.9mm at its thickest point. Being a gamer-oriented product, Xiaomi has added RGB lighting to four different zones around the laptop's body. The Mi Gaming Laptop features a 15.6-inch Full HD panel with a 72% color gamut and slim 9.9mm bezels. The keyboard also has its own RGB lighting and comes with features like 30-key rollover and five programmable keys. In terms of connectivity options, the Mi Gaming laptop provides users with four high-speed USB 3.0 ports, two USB-C ports, a HDMI port, and a 3.5mm jack with its own high-powered amp. Equipped with stereo 3W speakers, the laptop has also earned the Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio certifications.

For cooling, Xiaomi implemented their own 3+2 design for the heatpipes and four air exhausts. Xiaomi's solution relies on two fans to provide active cooling. The Mi Gaming laptop is powered by Intel's latest Kaby Lake Core i7-7700HQ processor and it's available in two versions. The base version carries a $960 price tag and comes with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, 8GB of memory, a 128GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive. The high-end version goes for $1,440 and boasts an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, 16GB of memory, a 256GB NVMe SSD, and a 1TB hard drive. The Mi Gaming Laptop will go on sale in China from April 13.
